Borj el Kastil
Djerba · Tunisia
Named after the 15th-century Spanish fort whose foundations extend into the sea, Borj el Kastil is a shallow dive site where ancient masonry and natural limestone merge seamlessly beneath the surface. The submerged walls are completely colonised by multi-coloured sponges, tunicate clusters, and flat oysters, creating a vertical gallery of Mediterranean invertebrate life in just 3 to 15 metres. Octopus are extraordinarily abundant here, exploiting the countless crevices between old stone blocks, and the site sees excellent macro opportunities with nudibranchs and gobies in the rubble margins.
