Ras el Aouah Reef
Djerba · Tunisia
The northeastern cape of Djerba shelters a broad limestone reef shelf that drops from 5 metres to 22 metres through a series of stepped terraces covered in yellow and orange encrusting sponges, red starfish, and fields of Neptune grass. Posidonia meadows on the shallow plateau provide nursery habitat for juvenile fish, while the deeper ledges hold conger eels, large grouper, and schools of bogue circling in the mild current. Visibility regularly reaches 25 metres in summer, making this the site most favoured by underwater photographers.
