Large morays up to 1.5 metres occupy nearly every hollow on the hull, resting with gaping mouths in a behaviour that reflects respiration rather than aggression. They play a critical scavenger and predator role, maintaining balance between crustacean and small-fish populations. Cleaning shrimp of the genus Lysmata regularly service them at fixed stations along the gunwales.

Mediterranean Moray is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
