Banded butterflyfish

Chaetodon striatus

Sighting evidence at Champagne Reef Dominica, Dominica

Banded butterflyfish are faithful partners: pairs mate for life and are almost never observed alone. They browse coral polyps and small invertebrates along the reef, and their abundance at Champagne Reef is a useful indicator of the hard coral health around the vent system. The warm vent water creates a microhabitat that draws unusual aggregations of juvenile fish seeking shelter in the altered temperature gradient.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
