Bullethead Parrotfish

Chlorurus sordidus

Sighting evidence at Lubna Street Reef, Dubai

Terminal phase males in turquoise and pink display prominently on the reef crest, grazing coral with their fused beak-like teeth and excreting fine white sand — a process that contributes meaningfully to Gulf beach sand formation over geological time. Initial phase fish form loose schools that blend into the coral structure, providing camouflage from predators. At night individuals wrap themselves in a mucus cocoon on the reef to mask their scent from hunting moray eels.
