Bullethead parrotfish

Chlorurus spilurus

Sighting evidence at Muri Lagoon Reef, Rarotonga, Cook Islands

A highly abundant parrotfish across sheltered Pacific lagoons, the bullethead parrotfish grazes continuously on algae-covered substrate and is responsible for much of the bioerosion that produces the fine sand bottom in lagoon environments. Males display vivid blue-green terminal phase colouring, while females are drab brown and easily overlooked despite their abundance.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
