Feather Star (Crinoid)

Comantheria sp.

Sighting evidence at La Catedral, Easter Island

Feather stars drape the interior walls of La Catedral in dense colonies of outstretched arms, their delicate filtration fans spread to capture plankton from the gentle current that sweeps through the arch. Easter Island's crinoid diversity is not fully described and some individuals at this site may represent undescribed species given the island's high endemism rates. Their vivid colours — orange, yellow, deep red — contrast dramatically with the dark basalt walls and make macro photography inside the arch exceptionally rewarding.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
