Regal Angelfish

Pygoplites diacanthus

Sighting evidence at Nambatu Reef, Efate

Regal angelfish are present in unusually high numbers on Nambatu Reef's wall section, where the complex hard coral architecture provides the shelter they require and the sponge and tunicate community feeds them year-round. Their striking white and orange vertical banding with the blue-edged dorsal fin makes them one of the most instantly recognisable and reliably beautiful species on the wall. Pairs maintain territories on specific sections of wall that local guides can direct visitors to with confidence.
