Atlantic Halibut

Hippoglossus hippoglossus

Sighting evidence at Dalvík Wall, Eyjafjörður

Large Atlantic halibut rest on the gravel slope at the base of the wall, using perfect camouflage to ambush passing fish and crustaceans. Adults in Eyjafjörður can reach over a metre in length, and individuals are sometimes seen repeatedly at the same resting spots across multiple dives. This species is a priority conservation species in Iceland due to historical overexploitation.
