Common Edible Crab

Cancer pagurus

Sighting evidence at Dettifoss Wreck, Eyjafjörður

Edible crabs congregate in the darker recesses of the wreck's interior, feeding on molluscs and organic debris that settles among the rusting metalwork. Their hard-shelled bulk makes them a key prey item for the conger eels sharing the same compartments, and observing this predator-prey dynamic in an enclosed space is one of the wreck's unique attractions. Specimens here are notably large, benefiting from the cold, productive waters of the inner fjord.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
