Dettifoss Wreck
Eyjafjörður · Iceland
The Danish cargo steamer Dettifoss lies in remarkably intact condition on the soft sediment floor of the inner fjord, her hull rising 6 metres from the seabed and offering a compelling dive through a real piece of 1940s maritime history. Conger eels occupy the holds while pollack school above the mast and plumose anemones have colonised every inch of exposed metalwork. The low temperatures of Eyjafjörður have preserved the wreck's structural integrity, and the crow's nest, bridge, and anchor winches all remain recognisable.
