Plumose Anemone

Metridium senile

Sighting evidence at Dettifoss Wreck, Eyjafjörður

Snow-white plumose anemones have carpeted the superstructure and rails of the Dettifoss, their feathery tentacles creating a ghostly halo effect in torch light. This species thrives on hard substrate in cold nutrient-rich water, and the wreck provides ideal settlement surface in an otherwise soft-bottomed fjord environment. Colonies can persist for decades, making long-established wrecks like this one among the most biodiverse artificial reefs in Arctic waters.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
