Shoals of pollack circle the Dettifoss's mast and upper structure, using the wreck as a reference point and current break in much the same way reef fish use coral heads in tropical waters. They feed on sand eels and small crustaceans disturbed by divers moving through the structure. Juveniles shelter lower on the wreck while large adults hover in open water above, creating a clear depth-stratified community.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
