Miller's Point hosts one of the densest octopus populations in South Africa, with individuals occupying virtually every suitable rocky crevice along the reef. These highly intelligent cephalopods can be observed hunting crabs and small fish with remarkable coordination, sometimes herding prey against rock faces before striking. Night dives here are especially productive for octopus encounters, as individuals emerge from their dens to roam the open reef in search of food.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
