Sighting evidence at Punta Espinoza, Fernandina Island

Sea lions at Punta Espinoza are completely habituated to human presence and are the defining dive companions of a Fernandina experience. Juveniles in particular treat divers as interactive toys, blowing bubble rings, tugging at fins, and performing aerial somersaults just above the diver's head before vanishing in a burst of speed. The combination of penguins, iguanas, and sea lions all interacting simultaneously in the same shallow dive creates a sensory experience that is genuinely impossible to replicate anywhere else on Earth.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
