Dense schools patrol the transition zone between rocky outcrops and open sand, foraging on invertebrates and algae. They are important grazers that keep algal growth in check across the shallower reef zones. At Sarsala they form mixed schools with salema, creating dramatic fish aggregations visible from the surface.
