Batu Bolong
Flores · Indonesia
Batu Bolong — meaning hollow rock — is a tiny volcanic pinnacle rising from deep water in the Komodo channel that is widely regarded as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world, its flanks blanketed in soft coral so dense that the rock beneath is entirely invisible. Ripping currents from the Komodo channel deliver extraordinary concentrations of nutrients that support fish biomass of staggering density: Napoleon wrasse, giant trevally, bumphead parrotfish, reef sharks, and eagle rays all compress into the narrow current-swept water column around the pinnacle simultaneously. The site demands advanced current-diving skills but rewards with an underwater spectacle that experienced divers consistently rate as among the most intense they have ever seen.
