Los Lobos holds some of the largest dusky groupers recorded in the Canary Islands, a direct result of the marine reserve protection that prevents spearfishing. Individuals weighing over 20 kg occupy territories around the largest boulders at La Baja del Ganado and are completely unafraid of divers — a stark contrast to groupers in fished areas, which disappear at 10 m range. All dusky groupers begin life as females and some individuals transition to male after 12 years, a strategy that maximises reproductive success by ensuring the dominant animal in each territory is male.

Dusky grouper is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
