Longfin bannerfish

Heniochus acuminatus

Sighting evidence at Dolphin Reef (Shaab Sataya North), Fury Shoals

Longfin bannerfish appear in small pairs and loose groups throughout the coral formations on the northern wall, their dramatically extended dorsal filament and black-and-white banding making them one of the most photographed reef fish at the site. They feed on zooplankton and benthic invertebrates, hovering at mid-water facing into mild currents to intercept passing food particles. Their willingness to hold position in current while feeding makes them accessible photographic subjects even for divers with entry-level camera setups.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
