Yellowbar angelfish

Pomacanthus maculosus

Sighting evidence at Dolphin Reef (Shaab Sataya North), Fury Shoals

The yellowbar angelfish is one of the Red Sea's most distinctive endemic species, and Dolphin Reef North's coral-rich walls host multiple territorial pairs that can be reliably found near the same coral heads on every dive. They feed primarily on sponges and tunicates growing on the wall face, and their bold yellow blotch on a deep-blue body makes them one of the most striking reef fish in the entire region. Juveniles have entirely different colouration — white-striped on black — representing an evolutionary signal of non-competition with adults for resources.

Yellowbar angelfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
