Grey reef sharks patrol the outer reef edges of Shaab Sataya continuously, often in small groups of three to seven individuals that circle the drop-off at mid-water depth. The relative absence of fishing pressure across Fury Shoals means these animals are less wary than at more accessible Egyptian sites, allowing extended observation of natural patrolling behaviour. Their presence is an indicator of ecosystem health — high grey reef shark density correlates strongly with intact coral reef communities and functional fish populations.

Grey reef shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
