Spinner dolphins are Shaab Sataya's signature residents, with a pod numbering 50 to 200 individuals using the lagoon as a daily resting ground after nocturnal deep-water hunting forays that can take them to 200 m or more. Their acrobatic spinning leaps — sometimes completing seven rotations before re-entering the water — are a social behaviour whose exact function remains debated, with leading hypotheses including acoustic communication and parasite removal. Encounters are entirely on the dolphins' terms; the pod initiates contact with swimmers who remain still at the surface, making patient observation the only reliable strategy.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
