Common dolphins are resident in the Galician upwelling system year-round and frequently bow-ride charter boats heading to Cabo Vilán. In calm conditions pods of 20 to 100 individuals sometimes remain at the site while divers are underwater, circling curiously before returning to feed on the dense sardine and anchovy schools that define the Galician pelagic ecosystem.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
