Scalloped hammerheads aggregate at La Cazuela in schools of 20 to over 100 individuals, drawn by the upwelling currents that concentrate prey along the submerged ridge. These sharks are most reliably encountered from July through November when cold, nutrient-rich water pushes up from depth and creates ideal feeding conditions. Their schooling behaviour at Gorgona is one of the best-documented hammerhead aggregations on the Colombian Pacific coast.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
