Arguineguín Seamount
Gran Canaria · Spain
The Arguineguín seamount rises from deep Atlantic water to a shallow volcanic summit 8 metres below the surface, creating a natural focal point where upwelling nutrients concentrate pelagic predators in numbers rarely seen this close to shore. Great barracuda assemble here in cylindrical schools of several hundred individuals that rotate slowly around the seamount peak, accompanied by amberjacks and Atlantic bonito that streak through in hunting passes. The outer slopes drop steeply past gorgonian gardens and into the blue, and resident large Atlantic torpedo rays buried in the volcanic sand at depth provide an arresting highlight that rewards divers who explore beyond the main aggregation.
