The yellowmouth barracuda is a Macaronesian endemic found only in the Canary Islands, Madeira, and Azores — distinguishable from the great barracuda by its yellow-tinged jaw and smaller maximum size. It often schools alongside great barracuda at the Arguineguín seamount, creating mixed aggregations that offer a rare opportunity to observe two closely related species with overlapping but distinct ecological niches. As an endemic species with a restricted range, the yellowmouth barracuda is of significant conservation interest and its population status in the Canaries is monitored through recreational diver sighting records.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
