La Catedral
Gran Canaria · Spain
La Catedral is a vast submerged lava tunnel whose arched ceiling soars up to 15 metres high, creating a natural cathedral of black volcanic rock carpeted in orange and red encrusting sponges. The tunnel system extends roughly 80 metres through the headland near Arguineguín, with multiple skylights letting shafts of Atlantic light pierce the interior and illuminate dense aggregations of glassfish and cardinalfish sheltering in the gloom. Outside the exit wall, moray eels occupy every crevice and large shoals of salema porgies orbit the reef top in continuous tidal rhythm.
