Glasseye snapper

Heteropriacanthus cruentatus

Sighting evidence at Eden Rock & Devil's Grotto, Grand Cayman

Glasseye snappers are nocturnal predators with dramatically oversized eyes adapted for low-light hunting, and they spend daylight hours packed into the darker recesses of Devil's Grotto where their reddish colouration — which appears grey at depth in natural light — provides camouflage against the shadowed walls. Their large eyes make them a standout subject for wide-angle photography when torch beams reveal their vivid colouration. They feed nocturnally on small fish and crustaceans just outside the cave entrances.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
