Glasseye Snapper

Heteropriacanthus cruentatus

Sighting evidence at Cueva de los Peces, Bay of Pigs

Dense congregations of several hundred red-orange glasseye snappers fill the cave's twilight zone from wall to wall, hovering in stationary schools that pulse gently in the weak current. This species is nocturnal in open reef settings, but the cave's perpetual dim light allows the school to remain aggregated and semi-active throughout the day. They feed on small crustaceans and zooplankton that concentrate in the cave's mixing waters.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
