Caribbean reef squid gather in hovering schools around the Kittiwake's upper deck at dusk, communicating through rapid skin chromatophore changes that produce travelling waves of colour. They are highly intelligent cephalopods that orient in formation to confuse predators and coordinate cooperative hunting of small fish. Night dives on the wreck regularly reward divers with close encounters as the squid are drawn to dive lights.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
