Great barracuda are apex ambush predators that use speed bursts exceeding 40 km/h to stun prey. On the Kittiwake they are resident fixtures, hovering motionless in the current beside the superstructure and using the wreck as a cleaning station. Their hollow-point dentition and counter-shaded silver body make them immediately recognisable; despite their fearsome appearance they rarely threaten divers unless provoked or attracted by reflective jewellery.

Great barracuda is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
