Spotted spiny lobster

Panulirus guttatus

Sighting evidence at Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, Grenada

The sheltered crevices of the concrete sculptures provide ideal daytime refuge for spotted spiny lobsters, which emerge at night to forage on the surrounding sand for snails, worms, and small crustaceans. Unlike their temperate relatives, spiny lobsters lack claws and rely entirely on their sharp spines and nocturnal behaviour for predator avoidance. Night divers at Molinere regularly find 6 to 10 individuals per sculpture, making the park a reliable lobster encounter even as natural reef populations decline from overfishing.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
