Edible Crab

Cancer pagurus

Sighting evidence at Rathlin Island, Ireland

Rathlin's rocky seabed hosts thriving populations of edible crab sheltering in kelp holdfasts and boulder fields, taking advantage of the reserve-adjacent status of the surrounding waters. Large adults with carapaces exceeding 25 cm are relatively common here compared to heavily fished mainland coasts. They are important prey for conger eels and octopus sharing the same habitat.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
