Edible Crab

Cancer pagurus

Sighting evidence at Munkholmen Island, Trondheim Fjord

Large edible crabs, sometimes over 20 cm across the carapace, are abundant under boulders and within the old fortification stonework at Munkholmen. They are nocturnal foragers and by day sit motionless in crevices, their brick-red shells matching the encrusted rock. The protected status of the broader fjord area means individuals here grow to exceptional sizes rarely seen in fished waters.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
