Afuera (Whale Shark Aggregation)
Isla Mujeres · Mexico
The open water north of Isla Mujeres hosts the largest known aggregation of whale sharks on the planet, with hundreds of individuals converging June through September to filter spawn from mass spawning events above the Yucatan Shelf. Snorkelers and freedivers enter the water to swim alongside these gentle giants, sometimes 10 to 20 animals visible in a single glance. The aggregation is seasonal but utterly predictable, drawing researchers from around the world to study feeding ecology and migration patterns.
