B-17 Flying Fortress
Istria · Croatia
A WWII American B-17G heavy bomber lies broken in two main sections at 68 metres depth in the open Adriatic northwest of Poreč — shot down in 1944 and relatively undisturbed, it remains one of the most historically significant aircraft wrecks in the Mediterranean. The dive is a technical undertaking, but advanced open-circuit and rebreather divers regularly make the trip to see the twin tail, engines, bomb bay, and Browning turret positions draped in deadman's fingers and populated by rockfish. The fuselage orientation and the sheer scale of the aircraft — 22 metres wingspan on the seabed — make for an otherworldly silhouette in the blue.
