Dusky grouper are the apex sit-and-wait predators of Mediterranean rocky reefs — large adults can exceed 1.5 metres and live more than 50 years. They are protogynous hermaphrodites, beginning life as females before the largest and oldest individuals transition to males. The protected waters of Brijuni support some of the most approachable and densely populated dusky grouper in the northern Adriatic.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
