The Mediterranean moray inhabits rocky crevices throughout the wall and is a reliable encounter at virtually any depth on the site. They are obligate carnivores equipped with a second pair of pharyngeal jaws that shoot forward to drag prey into the throat — a feeding mechanism unique among vertebrates. Despite their fearsome reputation morays are not aggressive toward divers unless provoked or handled.

Moray eel is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
