Paramuricea clavata is a branching gorgonian coral and a canopy species of the Mediterranean's cooler, deeper reef zones. It grows slowly — a few centimetres per year — and individuals on the Savudrija Wall may be several decades old. The fans orient perpendicular to prevailing current to maximise capture of zooplankton, and their branching structure shelters goby species, tiny crustaceans, and brittlestars.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
