Yellowfin tuna are frequently sighted in small schools cruising the blue water alongside the outer wall, drawn by the baitfish concentrations that the reef edge creates where shelf water meets open ocean. These large, powerful fish can reach 2 metres and are built for sustained high-speed pursuit, with their long yellow dorsal and anal fins reducing drag at speed. Encounters are typically fleeting but spectacular, as the school breaks surface in a boiling frenzy before vanishing into the deep blue within seconds.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
