Whitetip reef sharks rest in small groups on the sandy rubble around the cleaning station bommies, emerging to patrol the reef at dusk and through the night. Unlike many requiem sharks they are strongly site-faithful, with tagged individuals in similar Fijian habitats documented returning to the same resting sites day after day. Their slender body plan allows them to navigate the reef matrix efficiently in pursuit of resting fish prey sheltering in crevices after dark.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
