Grey reef sharks congregate at Naingoro Pass in schools of 10-30 individuals, using the tidal channel as a feeding highway where prey fish concentrate in the current. These sharks are strongly associated with reef passes throughout the Indo-Pacific and exhibit bold threat displays — arching the back and lowering the pectoral fins — when approached too closely, requiring divers to maintain respectful distances. Population studies in Fijian waters suggest resident shark schools form stable social groups with recognisable dominance hierarchies.

Grey Reef Shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
