Blacktip reef sharks patrol the sandy channels between coral heads in groups of 3 to 10, their distinctive dorsal-fin tips breaking the surface in the shallows at dawn and dusk. As the reef's primary mid-trophic predator, they regulate surgeonfish and parrotfish populations that would otherwise over-graze the corals. Bar Reef's healthy shark population is a strong biological indicator of overall reef condition — apex predator presence consistently tracks ecosystem integrity.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
