Schools of bumphead parrotfish visit the outer reef at Wanlitung in the early morning hours, grazing on coral and filling the water with the crackling sound of their beaks against limestone. They are most reliably encountered from October through April when water clarity peaks and boat traffic is lightest. A single school of 20 to 30 individuals can process a substantial section of reef during a single morning foraging run.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
