Giant morays occupy permanent territories in the caves and overhangs of the Wanlitung wall, where reduced fishing pressure has allowed individuals to reach exceptional size — some exceeding 2 meters in length. They are regularly observed emerging from their dens at dusk to hunt cooperatively alongside grouper, a rare interspecies foraging behavior documented here. The reserve's protected status means these animals are habituated to divers and remain in the open far longer than at unprotected sites.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
