Spotfin Lionfish

Pterois antennata

Sighting evidence at Wanlitung Marine Reserve, Kenting National Park

Lionfish congregate in the shaded overhangs and cavern entrances of the reserve's reef wall, often three or four individuals sheltering together beneath a single coral table. At night they become active hunters, spreading their pectoral fins to herd small reef fish into corners before striking. Their venomous spines and bold coloration make them one of the most photographed subjects at Wanlitung.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
