Zamami Whale Watching Dive
Kerama Islands · Japan
The open channel northwest of Zamami Island serves as a primary calving ground for humpback whales migrating from the North Pacific each winter, making it one of the very few places on earth where divers can enter the water alongside these 15-metre giants in good visibility. Mothers and calves rest in the shallows while escorts circle protectively, and on calm days the resonant song of adult males carries through the water column from kilometres away. Outside whale season, the same seamount edges host aggregations of spotted eagle rays and white-tip reef sharks patrolling the current lines.
