Spotted eagle rays cruise the channel edges in small groups throughout the year, their distinctive white-spotted dorsal surfaces making them easily identified from above. They feed on molluscs and crustaceans buried in sandy patches between reef spurs, using their broad, flat snouts to excavate prey. Encounters are most frequent at depth around 18 to 28 metres where current lines concentrate their food supply.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
