Shark Island
Kosrae · Federated States of Micronesia
Shark Island is a submerged reef pinnacle rising to within 8 meters of the surface off Kosrae's northeast coast, where the convergence of two current channels creates a perpetual fish soup that attracts grey reef sharks and Napoleon wrasse in exceptional concentrations. The top of the pinnacle is blanketed in a mosaic of hard corals that scientists have cited as among the highest-coverage reefs in FSM, with virtually no bleaching scars visible. Schooling jacks and fusiliers sweep through the water column in synchronised baitball formations whenever a current is running.
