Giant moray eels reach 2.5 meters at Walung, sheltering in the large barrel sponges and undercuts that pepper the wall between 15 and 25 meters. These apex predators cooperate with goatfish and groupers in cooperative hunting behaviour, cornering reef fish in coral crevices too small for any one predator to enter alone. Their presence in high numbers and large size at Walung is a direct indicator of the reef's exceptional health and the absence of extraction pressure.

Giant Moray is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
